It is fair to say that the iconic Land Rover Series 1 has played a prominent part in many adventures across the world since the range was first manufactured in 1948.
Land Rover has claimed that over 70% of all the vehicles they have ever built are still in use today, and a 1957 Series 1 is continuing to break new ground for the legendary 4x4 brand. If you thought that Land Rovers had been everywhere and done everything possible, think again!
For what is believed to be the first time ever, a Land Rover has been turned into a train courtesy of 88-in Series 1 owner Mark Saville, who truly embodies the “Go Anywhere” spirit of Land Rover.

Mark has replaced the regular wheels with a custom set of railway-friendly train wheels from cast LM25 magnesium/ aluminium alloy. This means that his fully functioning and road-legal 1957 Series 1 can take to the railways in under an hour!
He has already successfully taken his Series 1 onto the Foxfield Railway, North York Moors Railway and the Bluebell Railway.
Furthermore, Mark also had an outing at the Severn Valley Railway earlier this month and it was of course, a massive success. You can see more of this in the YouTube video embedded below.
The Series 1, affectionately known as “Plimsoll”, has also had driving adventures in Iceland, the Arctic Circle in Norway, the Jura Mountains in Europe, and many more.
What’s next for Mark and Plimsoll? Well, Mark’s next objective is to drive it across the Forth Rail Bridge!
